A "shorty" at Musée d'Orsay...

I've been trying out oil painting a little lately, and this afternoon I thought I better go and check it out a little "how they did it in the old days". So I went to musée d'Orsay to study my "options"and to see how I could eventually treat this, for me, quite new material. I find it sticky, a bit messy and I'm not very certain of the liberty it could give me. I starting to seriously believe it's huge, I just would like to have the basic stuff in my pocket to be able to explore faster!!
I'll continue my investigation, I feel like hanging on this time, even if it might be a slow process. I have always been attracted to oil paintings and now I notice that I need to look at them in a different way. I feel lucky to have some of the most beautiful museums near home, it will be needed.
Above are the last double pages in my small Moleskine sketchbook, I'll get a new one for my future museum visits soon again...

Figure drawing...

It happens that a pose of a model doesn't inspire me, in particular when I can't find any interest in shape or light. I also notice that I'm very sensible about the presence of the model, it has to be "whole"; even though the pose "could do", but I feel her or his mind is far away or the expression completely indifferent to the pose, it totally "cuts me off" and nothing good will come out of it.
I feel as if it's even destructive to draw then, so I try to find another subject that could do for a few minutes, like in this example above.

Yellow rose...

Yesterday I had a long day teaching watercolor and doing flower painting demonstrations from real yellow roses. My fears tend to diminish when I show how to paint. I suddenly feels natural and the fear of failure is gone.
This is one of the roses I painted yesterday...

Teaching method and technic:

Learning to paint is a lot about learning to observe. This is why I teach watercolor with emphasis on the importance of drawing in theory and in practice when I feel the need.
During the course we paint subjects from life, or from photographs, knowing it's clearly more profitable to paint and draw from life. I insist on the importance of the values. They create the impression of volume, space and light, by their range of strong and soft contrasts.
While we practice the various technics that are unique to watercolor I'll teach easy ways to mix colors, explore different papers and any other material you need. With time and a little commitment with your painting activity I hope you will feel it become more like a second nature.
